Why sort text online?

Sorting a list by hand is slow and error-prone, and a spreadsheet is overkill for a few dozen lines pasted from somewhere else. The catch is that plain alphabetical sorting puts “file10” before “file2”, because it compares character by character — natural sort reads the digits as numbers and orders them the way a person would.

How it works

  1. Paste your lines.
  2. Pick alphabetical, natural or by-length, ascending or descending.
  3. Optionally strip duplicates and blank lines in the same pass.
  4. Copy the sorted result — your original capitalisation is untouched.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I sort the lines?

Choose alphabetical (A→Z), natural (so "item2" comes before "item10"), or by line length — each in ascending or descending order.

What is natural sorting?

Natural sort treats runs of digits as numbers, so "file2" comes before "file10" instead of after it. Plain alphabetical sorting compares character by character, which puts "file10" first.

Can I remove duplicate or blank lines at the same time?

Yes. Toggle "Remove duplicates" and "Remove empty lines" to clean the list as you sort it. Case-insensitive matching is honoured for duplicates too.

Does it change my capitalization?

No — your text is never altered. "Ignore case" only affects the comparison order and duplicate matching; the original casing of every line is kept.

When should I use natural sort instead of alphabetical?

Any time your lines contain numbers — file names, version strings, chapter lists or invoice references. Alphabetical sorting puts "v10" before "v2", which is almost never what you want.

How does sorting by length work?

Lines are ordered by character count rather than content. It's a quick way to surface unusually short or long entries when cleaning up a list.

How are accented and non-English characters sorted?

Comparison uses your browser's locale-aware collation, so accented letters sort next to their base letter rather than being pushed to the end as raw character codes would do.

Where do numbers and symbols end up in alphabetical order?

Before letters, following standard character ordering. Switch to natural sort if you want numeric values compared as numbers instead.

Is there a limit on how much text I can sort?

No fixed limit. Lists of tens of thousands of lines sort near-instantly; the practical ceiling is your device's memory.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Sorting happens entirely in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.
