Why convert HTML to Markdown?

Raw HTML is mostly scaffolding — tags, classes and inline styles that carry no meaning once you only want the words. Markdown expresses the same structure in a fraction of the characters, which matters when you're pasting into an AI prompt with a token budget, or moving content into a README, a wiki or a static site.

How it works

  1. Paste your HTML, from View Source or a CMS editor.
  2. Scripts, styles and presentational attributes are stripped automatically.
  3. Headings, lists, links, code blocks and tables are mapped to Markdown.
  4. Copy the clean Markdown output.

Frequently Asked Questions

What HTML elements are converted?

Headings, paragraphs, bold/italic/strikethrough, links, images, ordered and unordered lists, blockquotes, code blocks, and tables (GitHub-flavored). Inline styles, classes, and scripts are stripped.

Where does this HTML usually come from?

Anywhere you'd copy-paste from: a webpage's "view source", an email export, a CMS editor, or a browser extension that grabs page HTML. Paste it in and get clean Markdown out.

Will it execute any scripts in the HTML I paste?

No. The HTML is only parsed as text for conversion — it's never rendered or executed on the page.

Does it handle malformed HTML?

Reasonably well — the converter is tolerant of missing closing tags and other common mistakes, though very broken markup may produce imperfect results.

Why convert HTML to Markdown?

Markdown is dramatically shorter than the equivalent HTML, which matters when pasting content into an AI prompt with a token budget. It's also the native format for READMEs, wikis, static site generators and most note apps.

Are tables supported?

Yes, using GitHub-flavored Markdown table syntax. Very complex tables with merged cells can't be represented in Markdown and will be simplified.

What happens to images?

They become Markdown image references pointing at the original source URL. The images themselves aren't downloaded — if the source was a relative path, you'll need to fix the link.

Do CSS classes and inline styles survive?

No, and that's intentional. Markdown has no concept of styling, so presentational attributes are dropped and only the document structure is kept.

Can I convert a whole web page by URL?

Not directly — fetching another site's HTML from your browser is blocked by CORS, and adding a server to do it would break the promise that nothing leaves your device. Use your browser's View Source, copy the HTML, and paste it here.

Is my HTML uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.
