Why convert a PDF to EPUB?
PDF pages are a fixed size, which means endless pinching and scrolling to read a document on a phone or e-reader. EPUB reflows text to fit whatever screen it's on and respects the font size you've chosen, turning an unreadable document into a comfortable one.
How it works
- Drop in a PDF that has a real text layer — try selecting text to check.
- Text is extracted and paragraphs rebuilt from the line spacing.
- Pages are grouped into chapters of ten for predictable navigation.
- Download the reflowable EPUB.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it keep images and formatting from the PDF?
No — this tool extracts text only, so it can produce a properly reflowable EPUB (the whole point of EPUB, versus a fixed-layout image-based file). Fonts, colors, and images are not carried over.
How are paragraph breaks decided?
From the vertical spacing between lines on each page — a gap noticeably larger than the page's typical line spacing is treated as a new paragraph. It's a heuristic, not a true layout parse, so unusual layouts (multi-column pages, tables) may not split perfectly.
How are chapters organized?
Every 10 pages of the source PDF becomes one EPUB chapter ("Pages 1–10", "Pages 11–20", etc.) — PDFs don't have real chapter markers to detect generically, so this keeps navigation predictable for any document.
Does it work on scanned/image-only PDFs?
No. This tool reads the PDF's actual text layer — a scanned page with no embedded text (i.e. no OCR applied) has nothing to extract.
Why convert a PDF to EPUB at all?
PDF pages are a fixed size, which means constant pinching and scrolling on a phone or e-reader. EPUB reflows text to fit the screen and respects your chosen font size, making long documents genuinely readable on small devices.
How do I check whether my PDF has a text layer?
Open it and try selecting a line of text. If you can highlight individual words, there's a text layer and this tool will work. If the whole page selects as one image, it's a scan.
Will the EPUB work on a Kindle?
Modern Kindles accept EPUB via Send to Kindle. Older models may need it converted to a Kindle format first with a dedicated e-book tool.
What happens to tables and multi-column layouts?
They're read in the PDF's internal text order, which often doesn't match the visual columns — so multi-column academic papers and complex tables tend to come out jumbled. Simple single-column documents convert well.
Are page numbers and running headers removed?
No. Repeated headers and footers sit in the text layer like any other text and will appear between chunks of body text, which is the main tidy-up you may want to do afterwards.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Text extraction and EPUB assembly both happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.
